So there are several journals on this website that tell you to stop drawing in an anime/manga style. And a lot of the responses to those generally sound like : " BUT I LOOOVE ANIMEEEEE!"

But here's the deal :
It's not stopping to draw anime as trying to learn ACTUAL anatomy before stylizing it. I have lost SEVERAL years of artistic growth due to my obsession with anime in the past. I reproduce concepts that were incorrect because I had not bothered to check up how bodies actually work.

If you practice doing realism early on in life you will be able to NOT make the same mistakes and your art will only get better from that.

Sure , realism might seem boring (and I'll be honest , it is) , but considering how much it helped me to actually start paying attention to what things ACTUALLY looked like instead of what I THOUGHT they looked like , I think everybody can benefit from doing the same.

The problem with insisting to draw anime is that anime in general is very formulaic , using lots of visual shortcuts to portray concepts. The fact remains that while anime is "pretty" , noses don't look like this , eyes are not positioned THAT high on the face , bodies don't work that way , and boobs CERTAINLY don't work that way.

What you do when you insist on drawing anime all the time without ever learning about realism is copy a stylisation of something. So you , yourself , end up stylising a stylisation. So you might add mistakes over the previous artist's mistakes. And in the end your art will only end up looking like a cheaper version of someone else's art.

The fact is also that drawing realism will ACTUALLY IMPROVE your anime style. (If you insist on drawing in an anime style anyway).

So please , try and avoid a knee-jerk reaction when people tell you you should practice realism and work on your anatomy .And try to ACTUALLY DO IT instead.

Not everyone who says "stop drawing in an anime/manga style" do it to help people to learn the rules before drawing it, yes, there are people who do it, but other people do it because they think that "anime/manga styles" are all unoriginal and that all have bad anatomy, when in fact not all of them are like that, but i agree with most of what you said.

And about realism being "boring", subjetively some people like it and some people don't like it and objetively it's not "bad".
